Detection of the new Swine Flu Strain in the U.K.

Updated: Sep 26

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported the detection of a new strain of 'swine flu'—influenza A (H1N2)v—in a British individual who has had no known contact with infected animals, as this specific strain of swine flu is typically transmitted from sick pigs to humans.

Symptoms in humans indicative of swine flu include high temperature, runny nose, body aches, chills , cough and gastrointestinal symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhoea and vomiting. However, these symptoms bear resemblance to seasonal flu, certain Covid-19 strains, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which manifests cold-like symptoms without a notable temperature increase.

Therefore, it's crucial to undergo testing, especially for those feeling unwell or those with direct or indirect exposure to pigs or contaminated environments or individuals with co-morbidities such as cardiovascular issues or diabetes.
